Every "Pretty" Detail on a Trench Coat Had a Job
Told by The Curators · July 11, 2026
Every "pretty" detail on a trench coat had a job. In 1879 Thomas Burberry invented gabardine — cloth that kept rain out but let skin breathe. World War One sent it to the trenches: the belt rings carried maps and gear, the shoulder straps showed rank, the back cape sheds rain — and only officers could wear one. Then Humphrey Bogart wore one in Casablanca, and war gear became the most romantic coat on Earth. 🧥🌧️
